App Creation Strategy and $2892 in profit with no bloody idea

[This post has become famous thanks to TUAW, claiming my strategy was "spamming the app store] I suggest watching this video first.

So I started my app income process and I did everything wrong from October 25th…. (well not everything but anyway…)  here are the result:

My First App was Launched around the 10th of November… I decided to play the reskin game. Although this was not my first app, it was my first public app. Previously I had worked on Join Ventures and apps created for customers. This time I was going to have fun and try to make some quick $$$$ .

Disclaimer:  didn’t read any reskin book, any course, any blueprint, seminar or pre-crap ebook … I just did it my way

November and December Combined

RevMob

revmob

Chartboost

around $50 per day... from Chartboost

around $50 per day… from Chartboost

App figures

In app purchases was the best earner by far

In app purchases was the best earner by far

Some Numbers

- 35 apps sent, 29 published – 6 rejected

- Same code (Reskin method)

- Different Niche

- No reviews asked or requested.

- Only ASO used to generate traffic.

Income

  • Revmob November and December combined: $1646
  • Charboost November and December Combined: $1432
  • InApp Purchased $1914

Total income $4992

Average cost per app $60
Total cost $2100

Total Profit $2892

Last app uploaded : End of November

Work done in December: None

Things I did bad:

1) The apps are not good. Period. The code we used in this project wasn’t ideal. Although the app loserworks, I didn’t spend time to analyze the behavior of the user…. funny wise some users love the apps, I believe they can be much better.

I though that any code will do…. big mistake.

2) I’m crap dealing with partners. I started this project with a great guy but my stupid ego got involved and relationship and we end up ending up agreement. He end up producing more apps in December

3) I over did it. I sent to many apps too fast. the app store. In fact last 10 apps got rejected for “same type of apps” – I was too busy to even care. So I didn’t change them

4) I took it too serious and then dropped the ball 100% in December.

5) No localization = huge mistake

6) No rank tracking using app tools (Yes… crazy that the ASO god ignores tracking his own apps)

7) To furious to fast… some apps were sent with mistakes, bugs, performance…

8) No analytics . We have no idea what the user does with the app itself.

9) Horrible communication with developer

Things I did great:

1) Outsourcing graphic work winner

2) Dealing with VA’s to produce a factory of apps. My team in the Philippines are Ninjas.

3) Saving money producing a better production line. Every week we became faster.

4) I had fun… until some stage

5) ASO was done brilliantly – lol

6) Market researched worked pretty well.

7) Choosing an unconventional market , rather than trying to compete vs all the fruit ninjas retards out there.

8) Good copy writing in the app descriptions…. made it fun and I bet increased downloads.

The Goals for January

Be happy

Achieve $3000 recurrent profit (from original 35 apps)

Be more organized.

Recover those 10 apps rejected (they are in the dead zone now)

Upload 30 new apps with a different code….

Launch a Joint Venture with other app entrepreneur launching 20 apps (different code)

All this before my trip to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro in January 23th

Number of apps alive expected by February 1st : 75 (+20 shared)

  • Kevin Blakeley

Will you be providing links to the apps you create? I would be interested in seeing what they are.

    • Gabriel

Eventually Kevin, thanks for reading man

    • Gabriel

At some stage I may. Thanks for reading Kevin

  • Ryan Kelley

Am I the fruit ninja retard? Another great article by the way.

    • Gabriel

Nah Ryan, I doubt… but you can be if you want to be. ;)

  • Tom

Great idea for a blog. I’m looking forward to more updates.

    • Gabriel

      Thanks for stopping Tom

  • Tom

Have you thought about investing in any marketing? Like creating an ad on Facebook? Just curious if that would create more income.

    • Gabriel

Not sure if I could see a clear ROI, I think is easier for me to reduce the cost of each app rather than trying to increase their icome

  • Daniel

Who did you use to develop your apps?

    • Gabriel

They are reskins, so I build my own team Daniel

      • Daniel

Where do you buy the reasons from? I know there are several places, but is there a particular place to buy them from?

        • Gabriel

          I’m buying them from Chupamobile.

  • Michael

    Hi Gabriel,

congrats on your success and the new blog. Keep it up!

I’m very interested to learn more, could you please answer my questions?

    1. Did you reskin games or non-game apps? If non-game, which category?
    2. I heard that downloads & income from most reskinned apps dry up after a few weeks after the initial launch. Is this true in your case?
    3. How did you manage to get apps rejected for spamming if you bought proven source code?
    4. You said that ASO, market research and choosing an unconventional market worked well. Would you say that this are the reasons for your success with these apps?

    • Gabriel

Hi Michael, here are some answers, thanks for your comments…

      1. Did you reskin games or non-game apps? If non-game, which category?

They are games in the Board/Education/Word arena

      2. So far I’m still making around $150+ per day… apps have been up for over 6, 7 weeks

      3. we uploaded many similar apps with the same code, just different topic. it was pretty logical they were going to get upset. Silly me.

      4. The reason is because I’m building them vs thinking about it… and because I have managed to reduce my costs a lot. ASO wise, I knew that some topics are very niche and niche lovers buy (in this case download)

Thx for your reply, very helpful!

        • Gabriel

          2 Easy mate.

  • http://creatingyourownapp.com John

    Congrats Gabriel!

I just had my first app reskinned, uploading it this week. Can you tell me how you found outsources for this soo cheap? I mean $2,100 for 35 apps is nothing!! I paid $900 for graphics, programming and ASO (obviously you dont need to outsource the ASO) for just 1 reskin.

Did your outsourcers do graphics and Programming? Did you pay them per app or monthly salary?

    • Gabriel

In fact I made a mistake to be honest, I only have 29 alive atm…. but anyway…
For programming I negotiated bulk, even now I’m getting app or $30 for resking (coding etc)….
      For the rest salary.

the key is not in the outsourcer, is in the process….

  • Paul

Am I right that you are talking about IOS apps and not Android apps?

I couldn’t imagine that Android apps would be rejected.

Please let me know the platform ok?

    Thanks,

    Paul

    • Gabriel

Paul, I can’t believe I didn’t make that clarification. IOS mate. All good delicious Apple.

  • Karen

Hi Gabriel. Sorry for being so repetitive but have you received my email at your asoprofessional email address?

    • Gabriel

      replying to you tonight Karen

  • San

    Great read! Very interesting…
One question: why did you use BOTH chartboost and revmob? Why not go with only 1 ad network instead of 2?

    • Gabriel

Double chance of income…. a bit more heavy in advertisement…

  • http://theappmedia.com/ Ehsan

I have almost same strategy in my head but let first play with some other apps and after leaning things, i will do experiments with my apps.

    Thanks

  • Richard

Great article mate! You said your cost for each app is only $60? How did you get it so low? Did you hire freelancers from Philippines? Did you use odesk and other freelancer sites? I am a game dev looking to find some artists to re-skin a game i’m working on. Maybe you can share some tips on how to find low cost re-skins. Thanks.

How many apps did you upload at once? I’ve heard not to go over 2-3 but don’t really have any stats or info to back up this claim.

    • Gabriel Machuret

      20+

On one account? I’m surprised you got so many through if it’s all on one account.
